Associate Professor Professional interests include advanced materials for electronics, glass forming, new product development, cryogenics, a systems approach to energy efficient technologies and advanced power conditioning. Dr. Sanger enjoys contra dancing, music, art, drawing, and hiking. Prior to his arrival at Western Carolina University 2004, Dr. Sanger enjoyed an exciting career in industry developing new technologies and launching them into practice. You will recognize many of these technologies that we now take for granted: developing and producing high current internally cooled conductors for fusion reactors, superconducting magnets for Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems, high performance accelerator magnets for the Superconducting Super Collider, low cost power electronics for electric automobiles, high temperature power conditioning for the next generation Army tank, high power SiC switches for power utility energy management and energy efficient glass fiber drawing technology. He has held leadership positions at Oxford Superconducting Technology, Westinghouse, Northrop Grumman and the SSC Laboratory. He comes to WCU from Cleveland State University where he served as the Director of the High Performance Glass Forming Consortium as well as the Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Center . In both of these positions he fostered the university/industry connection and stimulated university engagement in the economic development of Northeastern Ohio . In addition to teaching project management and statics and strength of materials, Dr. Sanger leads the Center for Integrated Technologies, the external engagement arm for the Department of Engineering and Technology . Besides providing Western North Carolina access to the extensive faculty expertise at WCU, the center seeks to stimulate the development of new products and new businesses for the region.
