Visiting Assistant Professor, Telecommunications Engineering Technology

Fred Atkinson has worked in the telecommunications/I.T. industry for twenty-five years, which will make him an essential asset to the Telecommunications Engineering Technology program. His experience includes seven years with MCI and eight years with SkyTel. Fred’s industrial experience has been with telephony, PBX, Voicemail, and paging systems. During his time at SkyTel, he proposed and helped to implement a special paging access service for the Deaf. Professor Atkinson taught at Midlands Technical College where he worked with the Engineering Technology Department teaching courses such as CCNA 1, PC Maintenance and Repair, Computer Applications, Computer Networking, and Telecom Systems Management.

Fred earned his B.S. in Management from National-Louis University and completed his Masters degree in Information and Telecommunications Systems at Johns Hopkins University in 1997. During his degree program, Fred was involved in a graduate project to help the Montgomery County Medical Association upgrade their medical answering service from county-wide to statewide and beyond.

To keep up with current data technology, Fred finished a second Associates Degree, this time in Enterprise Network Management, in 2001 at Stratford University. He completed his CCNA in 2001 and recertified it in 2005. Fred looks forward to his time at Western.
